Herbal remedies have been used for centuries by cultures around the world to reduce a variety of emotional ailments. Today, there are herbs and vitamins that you can use to reduce the incidence of panic attacks and calm your anxiety. For anyone who wants to find natural ways to alleviate their panic attack symptoms, herbs and vitamins are sound options.

In a world where prescription medication is being used more and more frequently, there is a growing desire to take a more natural approach to health, and, if your emotional wellness is being threatened by panic attacks, there are natural avenues that will lead you down the road to relief.

In general, herbal supplements and vitamins can help to support the immune and nervous systems, making the body and mind stronger in the face of stress. While there are a wealth of herbs out there that support emotional balance, these specific herbs and vitamins are recommended for anyone suffering from the overwhelming anxiety that leads to a panic attack:

Valerian Root (Valerina Officinalis)

Valerian root is best known as a mild sleep aid when taken in high doses. When taken in lower doses, its calming effects also make it effective for use against panic attacks and other nervous conditions. Valerian root has exhibited the ability to reduce nervous excitability and mental over-activity. It can calm a racing mind which panic attacks are characterized by.

Passion Flower (Passiflora Incarnata)

Passion flower is a relaxant with tranquilizing properties. It has mild sedative effects in the Central Nervous System, which means that it calms and soothes nerves to reduce anxiety.

Vitamin B Complex

B-vitamins support a healthy nervous system. The body uses B-vitamins in times of stress to reduce the effects of sudden anxiety and panic.

Calcium and Magnesium

Both of these minerals are necessary for proper nervous system function and relaxation.

Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis): This hardy, lemon-scented perennial can calm the nerves and create an overall sense of well-being. Nausea is a common symptom of panic attacks, and lemon balm is effective in reducing upset stomach and digestive problems. It is a relaxant that has positive effects on heart palpitations, high blood pressure, and headaches—all of which can be associated with panic attacks.

When looking for herbal supplements and vitamins to alleviate panic attacks, it’s important to make sure they don’t contain any herbs that might stimulate the nervous system. Any stimulant, including the herb ma huong and chemical stimulants such as caffeine or nicotine, can exacerbate panic attacks. Also, make sure to speak with a doctor to make sure you don’t have an allergy or negative reaction to certain herbs.

Herbal supplements can be used alone or in conjunction with prescription medication, but it is generally recommended that, whatever course of physical treatment you choose for your panic attacks, you seek the help of a therapist as well.
