A small pilot study recently conducted suggests that mental health counseling given over the phone may ease some women’s depression symptoms after miscarrying.
The therapy was given to women with “subsyndromal” depression, which is less severe than major clinical depression but still causes significant symptoms – such as sleep difficulties, lack of energy and drive, changes in appetite and feelings of hopelessness and despair.
Previous studies have shown that women who suffer a miscarriage are at risk for not only major depression, but of subsyndromal depression, which is considerably more common.
The new study was a pilot project testing whether phone-based counseling could help women with milder depression following a miscarriage. This therapy aims to overcome some of the obstacles that keep people from in-person mental health counseling, like not having enough time or being reluctant to talk face-to-face.
The findings were reported in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.
