The FDA has approved the first prescription drug for the treatment of insomnia in the United States. Marloborough, Mass.- based Sepracor [nasdaq: SEPR] is to begin marketing Lunesta, in pharmacies starting in late January, 2005.
Though the Food and Drug Administration has approved the drug for use in insomnia patients, they have warned doctors not to prescibe the medication for long term use, as side effects and long-term adverse events have not yet been documented.
Lunesta will be competing directly in the sleep aid market with other FDA approved drugs like Ambien. Also scheduled for release this year, if approved by the FDA, are sleep disorder drugs by Pfizer (Indiplon) and Merck (Gaboxadol).
