It is relatively simple to perform self-hypnosis once one has a thorough understanding of the method. What one should remember is that hypnosis is a state that happens. It is not forced on anyone, nor can one force it on him or herself. Bearing that in mind, the greatest benefits are gained when the hypnosis is performed in an area where the person will not be disturbed and where they can get very comfortable. Most often people find it helpful to put a form of white noise in the background to help filter out all thoughts. This can be in the form of static on the TV or an AM station on a radio. If the person really would like to get into it, they may also purchase a machine specifically made to produce “white noise”.

At this point, you can move on into what Dr. Charles E. Henderson, a doctor of psychology, defines as the four basic levels of hypnosis- relaxation, deepening, suggestion application, and termination. In the first level, relaxation, it is suggested that you sit back, close your eyes, breathe deeply. This usually ends up taking anywhere from a couple of minutes to half an hour. Then, to begin the deepening state, you begin to count down from ten and imagine yourself falling into a deeper relaxed state. Remember to keep your mind clear of outside thoughts. Once you are in the hypnotic state, you are ready for suggestion. In this level, you focus on what it is you would like to accomplish, such as weight loss or anxiety relief. Pay close attention to speaking in the first person and using images for your suggestions. Finally, you are ready to close out the session with termination. During the final stage you imagine yourself gradually regaining consciousness and count back up to ten. You have just succeeded in your first self-hypnosis session.

It may take a few practices before actual results may appear, but do not be discouraged. If after a few attempts you still feel as if nothing seems to work, alter the suggestions and keep trying. However, if you feel more comfortable with someone who has more experience performing the hypnosis, then make sure to mind a few precautions.

Finding the right professional to perform hypnosis has more to do with checking for medical credentials than for a “hypnosis certification.” The real flair for hypnotism lies more with the individual being hypnotized because it is he or she who must actually perform all of the cognitive actions involved. All that the hypnotist needs is a soft, soothing voice and knowledge of the process.

It is best to check with a health care professional, or someone with particular training in the area of interest as to whether hypnosis is the best approach for treatment. Look for diplomas and state licensure when researching practitioners because hypnosis is not considered an actual profession. Rather, it is a method of treatment used by medical personnel as they deem appropriate
